Hidden behind a historic water mill that traces its roots back to the Domesday Book, our 16th-century Mill Cottage is surrounded by seven acres of woodland and water meadows. Over the centuries, the cottage has been many things—a miller’s home, a respite for U.S. soldiers during the Second World War, and even a tearoom in the 1960s. Today, it is our family home and the heart of Beside the Willows.

We are Verity and Kristian, and along with our two daughters, we’ve made Mill Cottage a place to live, create, and share. Kristian is a professional carpenter who brings our ideas to life with craftsmanship and care, while Verity loves sourcing unique details and designing welcoming spaces for guests to enjoy. Together, we’ve poured our energy into creating two special retreats for those looking to slow down and reconnect with nature.

The first was the Riverside Annex—once a playroom, now a peaceful one-bedroom hideaway with French doors opening to the River Bure, a private terrace, cedar sauna, and outdoor shower. Next came the Train Carriage, lovingly restored by Kristian from its days on the estate. Full of rustic charm and character, it’s complete with reclaimed furniture, a wood-burning stove, and its own garden and riverside seating area.

Every corner of Beside the Willows reflects our shared love of craft, nature, and thoughtful design. We’ve built it as a place where guests can rest, explore, and simply be—whether wandering woodland paths, sitting by the river, or enjoying a quiet evening under the stars.
